Why Media Relations is Still a Relevant Solution
With the rapid pace of media hungry for news stories to fill the 24/7 cycle, it is important to present a clean, well-developed package.
Pitching story ideas no longer happens on a phone call; generally, it is done via e-mail or using social media. That pitch then must be fleshed out by the practitioner, talking points developed, additional background information provided to the journalist as well as photos, video and the preparation for the interview. Whether in-person, online or over the phone, the interview is still the meat and potatoes of media relations.
Once the interview process has concluded, the journalist will write the article and send it to their editor. They can either use print, social media, video or online video to tell the story. If the story is strong enough, the interview will occur on camera to be used on several platforms.
This is when the magic happens. Evolving from media relations to marketing, the business owner can then utilize the story for their benefit. Re-printing, re-posting and sharing with potential clients and customers creates immediate credibility from a third-party as well as extends the reach of the news story. Contrary to previous reports, media relations isn't dead- quite the opposite. It has evolved to an ever-potent medium to gain new consumer interest.
